Identification of Isomeric Chondroitin Sulphates

J. B. ADAMS

Special Unit for Investigation and Treatment, New South Wales State Cancer Council, Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick, New South Wales.

CHONDROITIN SULPHATE occurs in three isomeric forms, A, B and C (see review by Hoffman et al. 1). Mathews2 has recently found the p K values of the carboxyl groups of chondroitin sulphate A and chondroitin sulphate B to be 3.1 and 3.5–3.6 respectively. In addition the A and B isomers have very similar electrophoretic mobilities in free solution at pH values of 2, 3 and 7. Results for chondroitin sulphate C were not given.
