Control of Humoral Factors of the Zona Glomerulosa of the Adrenal Cortex A. NAGY, A. OLAH & S. KARADY Institute of Pathophysiology, Medical University, Szeged. SELYE has reported1 that intraperitoneal injection of hypertonic saline resulted in characteristic changes in the zona glomerulosa of rat's adrenal gland. Broadening of the zona, blurring of cell outlines, foamy cytoplasm and swollen nuclei were seen in histological specimens. The fact that the zona glomerulosa can be stimulated by the sudden flooding of the organism with sodium chloride is rather striking in view of the statement that low sodium diet causes hypertrophy of this zone2–4. The effect is characteristic of sodium chloride, since other hypertonic solutions do not have the same action1. Kovács et al. have shown that the effect can be prevented by pretreatment with chloropromazine or by hypophysectomy5,6.
