Problems of Organic Growth

Abstract

ORGANIC growth is, without doubt, one of the basic biological phenomena. Physiology presents a wide realm of experiences concerning factors influencing growth ; however, the phenomenon of growth itself remains, as yet, unexplained. Many growth formulae have been proposed, but none has been generally accepted. Recent investigations, however, seem to provide a consistent theory leading to an explanation of growth in its general course as well as in its specific peculiarities, to quantitative laws allowing calculation and prediction, and towards a unification of the great physiological realms of metabolism, growth and form development1.
