Ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica give a glimpse of the dramatic variations of climate that occurred on our way into and out of past ice ages. Even better, from these frozen climate records we can determine the levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases while temperatures changed. Two spectacular records from both polar regions break new ground in terms of depth and resolution. Here Nature presents the new results, along with some of the classic ice core papers and a collection of ice-core related articles.
