Figure 1: Devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Colombia. As in many recent earthquakes, the resulting damage was strongly affected by local site conditions (amplification of ground vibrations) and by local design criteria (dynamic response of buildings and foundations). Although not the specific subject of an earthquake prediction programme, no obvious precursory warnings were reported.
