Developmental Compartmentalisation of the Wing Disk of Drosophila

Abstract

MOSAICS generated by genetic methods or by technical operations have been used to investigate cell autonomous and non-autonomous developmental processes. The use of cell autonomous genetic markers allows us to label cells for analysis of morphogenetic processes and to follow cell lineages in development1–4. If it can be shown that these cell lineages are fixed, a genetic analysis of development can be focused on how genes control clonal processes. This report will demonstrate the existence of clonal segregation of developmental pathways in the wing (dorsal mesothoracic) disk of Drosophila.
