Newly generated neurons in the dentate gyrus of a five month-old mouse. Left panel, expression of NeuN (blue) can be detected in mature granule neurons. Right panel, in addition, newly generated neurons can be identified through expression of doublecortin (green). Administration of BrdU (red), labeling newly generated cells, two weeks prior to perfusion confirmed the recency of the doublecortin-expressing cells.
