Description:

This program will address common but difficult diagnostic problems encountered by surgical pathologists in every day practice. Designed to simulate daily activities of pathologists, the symposium curriculum will review case histories in identified subject matter areas, view slides microscopically, and formulate appropriate diagnoses. Diagnosis, terminology, and patient management strategies for each case history will be discussed by faculty and attendees.

DIAGNOSTIC HISTOPATHOLOGY OF BREAST DISEASE

A week-long course designed for pathologists at Consultant and Senior Trainee level. The course provides a comprehensive coverage of the Histopathology of breast disease, with special emphasis on areas that pose diagnostic difficulties. The participants will be given ample time to study histological preparations, followed by illustrated discussion of the cases. There will be special sessions dealing with the interpretation of core biopsies and fine-needle aspirations. There will also be several daily talks dealing with specific topics, given by eminent breast pathologists and followed by discussion. The topics will include reporting breast biopsies, immunohistochemistry, hormone receptors and c-erbB-2 assessment, dealing with the gross specimen, progonostic factors, proliferativelesions/carcinoma in situ, problems in breast pathology, mucinous lesions of the breast, a practical approach to the diagnosis of breast lymphomas and molecular pathology including the morphology of breast cancer associated with BRCAI & 2 mutation. The faculty will include Ian Ellis, Christopher Elston, Andrew Hanby, Kristin Henry, Stephen Humphreys, Sunil Lakhani, Andrew Lee, Naomi Livni, Sarah Pinder and Sami Shousha.

DERMATOPATHOLOGY UPDATE: FOCUS ON TUMORS AND PIGMENTED LESIONS

The objective of this redesigned course is in-depth review and update on selected topics in dermatopathology. This year's course will focus on neoplastic diseases of the skin and melanocytic lesions. The course is specifically aimed at practicing general pathologists and dermatopathologists. The program of the course is also suitable for senior residents and fellows preparing for board certification examinations. This year's course will feature sessions on soft-tissue tumors and adnexal neoplasms. Review of melanocytic lesions will provide in-depth update on difficult areas of melanocytic pathology. Minisymposium on cutaneous lymphoma will cover recent progress in classification and diagnosis of lymphoma and cutaneous lymphoid infiltrates. For the first time the course will include 'hands-on' practical sessions.
