19th EUROPEAN CONGRESS OF PATHOLOGY, LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA SEPTEMBER 6–11, 2003
This will be the largest congress in Europe in 2003. Similarly to IAP International Congresses, it will cover basic diagnostic standards, update scientific achievements and recent technical advances in all areas of pathology at 30 symposia, 21 short courses, 21 slide seminars, 14 special presentations, 2 round table discussions and at free paper and poster sessions. The internationally recognised invited speakers are from thoughout Europe, including the UK, as well as from the USA. The Symeonidis lecture "In between the lines – sins and foibles of pathology writings" will be given by J. Rosai, and the three keynote lectures will be "Pancreatic neoplasms – their phenotype/genotype evolution" by G. Klöppel," "Current issues in diagnostic pathology of the prostate" by D.G. Bostwick and "Organ retention and the autopsy – the good and the grief" by J.C.E. Underwood. The official language is English. March 1, 2003 is the deadline for abstracts, which will be published in the September issue of Virchows Archiv. All invited lectures will be published in the Congress Proceedings Book. Approval of CME credit points has been applied for at the UEMS and Royal College of Pathology. There will be a rich and we hope enjoyable social programme and the chance to explore the old university central European city of Ljubljana, and picturesque Slovenia. The invitation is still open for those interested in being actively involved at the Gala Concert by pathologists-musicians. June 1, 2003 is the deadline for the early registration fee. This course will present state of the art information in the areas of soft tissue pathology, pathology of the hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues, pulmonary pathology, peritoneal pathology, gynecologic pathology and urologic pathology. A comprehensive course syllabus will be provided.
The course will be held at the National Cancer Institute in Milan. Milan is not only a great city with numerous attractions of its own but is ideally suited to explore the wonderful scenery of the Great Lakes and Alps and other attractive areas within reach include the Italian Riviera and somewhat further afield Venice. Milan has several outstanding museums, houses perhaps the most famous painting in the world (Leonardo DaVinci's Last Supper), has a spectacular gothic cathedral and famed opera house — La Scala. A trip to one of the Great Lakes will be available for an additional charge on Saturday, September 20th, after the course concludes.

DIAGNOSTIC PATHOLOGY OF SOFT TISSUE TUMORS NOVEMBER 10–14, 2003
The Department of Pathology, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, will present this 5-day postgraduate course on November 10–14, 2003 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, Cambridge, Massachusetts under the direction of Christopher D.M. Fletcher and Thomas Krausz (University of Chicago, Illinois).
This course is essentially practical (i.e. 'hands on') and on each of the 5 days two or three major "histogenic" groups of soft tissue tumors will be covered. Each day will be divided into three parts: Microscopy session, discussion and revision. The morning will start with histologic slide viewing during which a set of 45–60 cases relating to the day's topics will be available to each participant. At this stage only clinical histories (with no final diagnosis) will be provided, thus simulating a genuine diagnostic problem-solving situation. Participants will be provided with individual microscopes in order to allow personal examination and "hands on" study of the histologic sections. The cases have been selected to highlight problems in diagnosis, as well as illustrating typical examples of a very wide range of soft tissue tumors and pseudotumors. In the afternoon, all of the cases will be discussed individually by the course teachers, using a microscope attached to television monitors supplemented by 35 mm transparencies where appropriate. Participants will be encouraged to take an active part in the discussion of each case.
The Course has Category 1 accreditation for 35 hours of CME credit by the American Medical Association. The Course fee is $1050 (residents and fellows $750).
