There are extensive areas of zonal necrosis focally showing multinucleated giant cells with ground-glass nuclei (inset) characteristic of HSV infection (A). Dense lymphoid infiltrates were present, composed of a uniform population of small lymphocytes with admixed plasma cells (B).
