Histologic appearance of vaginal mucosa. The degree of inflammation varied from site to site in individual patients but tended to be more severe in HIV-positive individuals. Illustrated here are A, the more severe degree of inflammation in an asymptomatic seropositive case showing diffuse lymphocytic infiltration of the lamina propria with extension into the epithelium and B, the opposite end of the spectrum in a seronegative case showing no inflammation (both H&E, 200
