The March of Dimes occupies a unique place in the history of the United States.
Its efforts to raise money from average citizens to provide care for those suffering from polio
(poliomyelitis, or infantile paralysis), as well as to support research for vaccines against
the disease, represented the first largescale, nationwide biomedical initiative led by
a charitable organization.

Enhancing function and involvement across the life span through medical rehabilitation research
The mission of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) is
to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. In the current fiscal year,
JDRF will provide up to $93 million worldwide to support research relevant to its mission.
