Evaluating Diagnostics: the CD4 guide brought to you by
Nature Reviews Microbiology

Accurate CD4 counts are crucial laboratory markers for assessing immunodeficiency and the risk of disease progression in HIV-1 infection. HIV-1 causes a huge burden of morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries. This fourth supplement in the series on evaluating diagnostics brought to you by Nature Reviews Microbiology (*2007 Impact Factor 14.959) focuses on CD4 immunodiagnostics, which can be used to monitor CD4 counts, decide when to treat individuals with antivirals and whether treatments are effective.

NPG continues to support the advancement of science in the community

In October Nature was the proud sponsor of the Imagine Science Film Festival Awards in New York. Nature also presented its own Nature Awards for Mentoring in Science at a ceremony in Berlin. Congratulations to Klaas Bergmann, of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, and Heinrich Betz, director of the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt, who share the lifetime achievement award, and Peer Bork of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg who received the mid-career award.

November 10th sees the second in a series of Nature Debates in London. Enhancing the Body is a panel debate focusing on the risks and benefits of research extending the human body: from speed, strength and healing to heat tolerance, pain thresholds and more. If London is too far to travel, fear not. Visit the Elucian Islands, NPG's newly expanded islands in virtual world Second Life, for events you can attend no matter where in the world you are. Upcoming events include a Virtual Conference on Climate Change and CO2 Storage on December 3rd, the debut virtual conference on the Elucian Islands.
