Evidence vs Experience in Neonatal Practices

The third annual Evidence vs. Experience in Neonatal Practices conference was convened in Boston, MA on June 16–17, 2006. Like the previous two conferences held in Chicago, IL and San Diego, CA in 2004 and 2005, respectively, this year's event focused on current treatment options in the care of critically ill preterm and term neonates, and reviewed the evidence and practical experience available for the management of these patients. This year's conference had a turnout of close to 140 attendees. Neonatologists, fellows in perinatal–neonatal medicine, neonatal nurse practitioners and physician assistants were the primary audience.

Development of the program content and selection of faculty were accomplished by the steering committee consisting of Jatinder Bhatia, MBBS (Medical College of Georgia Augusta, GA, USA), Rangasamy Ramanathan, MD (Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA), Kris Sekar, MD (Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, OK, USA) and myself. Working with the steering committee were the staff of the conference's continuing medical education provider, The Annenberg Center for Health Sciences (Rancho Mirage, CA, USA). The committee assembled an outstanding faculty consisting of renowned academic experts from the United States and around the world. Invited faculty were requested to outline the available evidence and, where evidence was lacking, review the experience and critically examine the challenges in their area of expertise. Their second charge was to provide practical guidance for the practicing neonatologist in the management of critically ill preterm and term neonates.
