Pinta lesions in various stages of development from experimentally infected chimpanzees were subjected to histopathologic examination. Both early lesions and lesions of long duration were strikingly similar to the corresponding lesions in man. However, observed differences in the chimpanzee lesions included the demonstration of Treponema carateum in the upper dermis, a location in which they are rarely found in man. The endstage of chimpanzee pinta was hyperpigmentation or normal pigmentation of the affected area as opposed to irreversible hypopigmentation more commonly seen in man.
