No staining is observed in infarcted tissue (E) or when the primary antibody was omitted (A). B2 receptors are only expressed on cortical cells with neuronal morphology (B). Healthy cells show a nuclear staining pattern (B). After ischemia, cells showing signs of ischemic damage change their staining from nuclear to a more membrane-related pattern (C, arrows). Twenty-four hours after MCAO, most cells in infarcted tissue do not show any B2 receptor staining (E), while most cells in the margin of the infarct have marked B2 receptor positive cell membranes (F).
