RECENT COMGAN NEWS: ISN-COMGAN Workshop at WCN09 - Milan
On Monday May 25th COMGAN hosted a Workshop with a new and refreshing format whereby all COMGAN related awards were celebrated and young persons who made a major difference in their home countries after benefitting from ISN’s Global Outreach programs were invited to speak.
The 3 Fellowship Awards went to Dr Yingyos Avihingsanon (Thailand), Dr Gang Liu (China) and Dr Guillermo Rosa Diez (Argentina). For more details and to view their presentations please click here.
The Sister Renal Centers - Schrier Award went to the Nigeria-UK pair. For more details and to view their presentations please click here.
The following remarkable success stories were presented and we encourage you to take a look at their presentations:
Dr Randall Lou (Guatemala):
Dr. Lou is a past ISN Fellow, SRC program participant who then went on to become the President of Guatemalan Society of Nephrology (now former), and current Regional Vice President of the Latin American Society of Nephrology and Hypertension (SLANH)In 2008 Dr. Lou helped organize a CME in Guatemala which brought together the key players in Central America to discuss the prevention of kidney disease . The great success of the workshop led to Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO- regional branch of WHO) commitment to include CKD in the next summit of Presidents from the Central American and Caribbean countries. Since then a formal collaboration between ISN and PAHO has been agreed upon. Dr. Lou’s efforts have been one of the main forces behind this exciting and important collaboration.
Dr Sanjib Kumar Sharma (Nepal):
Dr. Sharma is a past ISN fellow, an ISN Research & Prevention project coordinator, and SRC participant. He has developed a highly successful self-sustaining organization for community screening and management of CKD and its risk factors. He demonstrated how his organization has managed to gather support from healthcare professionals and health authorities throughout Nepal. His endeavours are well respected beyond the borders of his own country and he is regularly invited to speak about his efforts.
Dr Dibya Singh Shah (Nepal):
Dr. Singh underwent a Fellowship training in Australia prior to returning to her home country Nepal in 2007. Upon her return her mission was to implement a National Renal Transplant Program in Nepal. Thanks to her and her team a first transplantation was carried out in August 2008, since then, 30 transplantations have been performed..
Dr Charlotte Osafo (Ghana):
Dr. Osafo is an ISN past Fellow who is now the Chief of Nephrology in Accra’s Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital; the largest hospital in Ghana. After her training in Birmingham, UK, she returned home to set up the first dialysis program in Ghana, she has also developed several satellite units as well as a new transplant program.

Recent COMGAN News: Launching the Educational Ambassadors Program
As of January 2009 the “ISN Educational Ambassadors” program will replace the previous Visiting Scholars Program.
The new program enables centers in the developing world to request a qualified expert to join them onsite for a few weeks to provide them with very specific training or to help initiate and develop new services or community based research and screening programs. The program matches the request against a database of qualified and approved experts and initiates all arrangements between the center and the selected Educational Ambassador; ISN covers certain of the experts expenses to travel and deliver training for a period of 1-4 weeks.
The Educational Ambassadors Program involves the ISN-COMGAN Regional Committees in the application process in order to assess the need and relevance of the requests for training. The program aims to advance nephrology through very concrete and immediate progress enabling the impact on the renal health care services in emerging countries to be well monitored.
The program also welcomes applications from volunteer Educational Ambassadors and thus provides ISN members and younger nephrologists with an invaluable opportunity for personal involvement in the societies’ educational programs while also building the sense of global solidarity and awareness in the renal world.
Detailed information on the program can be found on the program’s webpage
