A living frontier – exploring the dynamics of the cell membrane
'Textbook' definitions of cell membranes tend to give little emphasis to the lipid bilayers,
focusing instead on the various proteins they contain and their role in regulating functions
such as cell permeability and signalling. Yet the membrane, far from being a static barrier,
is in fact a dynamic environment in which many components interact, and lipids are much more
than silent partners. This meeting brought together an invited group of international
experts to discuss our current knowledge of cell membranes, and how our perceptions
are changing in response to the new information available about the complexity of the membrane
environment.
