Charting chemical space: finding new tools to explore biology
Despite centuries of research into synthetic organic chemistry, our acquaintance with the 'space' defined by multidimensional chemical descriptors is still extremely limited. This meeting brought together a group of internationally renowned researchers working at the interface between chemistry and biology to consider two main questions: what are the best ways to set about the exploration of uncharted chemical space; and how should we direct our efforts to concentrate on finding those molecules of greatest biological benefit? Given that our current selection of biologically active small molecules specifically interact with only a fraction of available macromolecular targets, a related question of central importance that was also considered was how much of unexploited biological space can we hope to successfully target?
