European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ESGCT) is one of the leading organizations in the field and is committed to offering continuous support to basic and translational research and clinical applications of gene and cell therapy for inherited and acquired diseases. Many of the recent advances have been made in Europe and ESGCT has played an active role in increasing awareness of gene and cell therapy through its Annual Congress and numerous interactions with other societies, funding organizations and regulatory bodies.

The theme for their Annual Congress in Brighton in 2011 was "Letting the science do the talking" so with that in mind, Nick Lemoine, Editor of Gene Therapy, interviewed some of the world's leading figures about the cutting edge in science, translational research and latest data from right across the world.

The American Society for Gene & Cell Therapy annual conference (Seattle in May 2011) is the largest of its kind in the world, bringing together scientists and clinicians working to translate our basic understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of disease into practical therapies for patients. This year we heard that there have been major advances as the fields of gene therapy and cell-based therapy have been brought together, allowing reprogramming of stem cells as well as the design of cellular delivery vehicles for gene therapy.

Gene Therapy was there to help transmit the most important and exciting findings to its readers. Nick Lemoine and Joe Glorioso, Editors of Gene Therapy, interviewed some of the world's leading figures in gene and cell therapy and here we present interviews with:

  • Malcolm Brenner — ASGCT Outstanding Achievement Award, reflects on lessons learnt and directions of travel for bone marrow stem cell transplantation
  • Victor Dzau — discusses the way forward in reprogramming stem cells to repair tissues, using the heart as a model
  • David Kirn — highlights the latest advances in oncolytic virotherapy for cancer
  • Darren Wolfe — discusses gene therapy for cancer-associated pain and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy
  • Robin Ali — reviews advances in stem cell biology and their application for diseases of the eye
  • Xiao Xiao — discusses gene therapy for muscular dystrophy
