After 3-hour exposure to HCl (pH 5.8) (brown bar) the mucosal sac did not release any more H₂O₂ into the surrounding supernatant than did nonacidified mucosa (green bar). In contrast, mucosa from animals with in-vivo–induced esophagitis (blue bar) released a significantly higher concentration of H₂O₂ into the supernatant. Values are mean + SEM, for three animals.
