The wing covert of the jay Garrulus glandarius is one of the most colourful feathers of Western European birds. They can sometimes be found on forest paths. This close-up photograph was taken with a Leica stereomicroscope by Raf Vervoort, a postdoctoral researcher at Leuven University, who is interested in the genetics of inner-ear development.
