The 2009 Cover Contest has a second first-prize winner!
Against strong competition, the image submitted by Dennis Breitsprecher from Hannover Medical School won the highest scores of the jury in the category "Best Scientific Image". His TIRF micrograph shows actin assembling on the surface of polystyrene beads coated with the protein VASP. The monomeric actin forms looped multi-filament bundles of astonishing regularity.
The editors and the jury would like to express their thanks again to all participants, whose submissions made this year's contest such an enjoyable experience for everyone. A small selection of other scientific and non-scientific images that were shortlisted and received an honourable mention by the jury will be published on our front covers later during the year.
