'Schwarzsee' lake near Fribourg, Switzerland - Ascending air bubbles have formed a peculiar pattern on the frozen lake surface.
This photograph by Urs Albrecht, a Professor for Biochemistry at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, was one of the runners-up in the final selection of The EMBO Journal's Cover Contest 2009.

Cover Competition
Each year in November, the editors are inviting submissions to a contest for the best scientific and non-scientific cover images. There are prizes and a lot of fun to be had, and the best contributions have a chance to be featured on The EMBO Journal front cover in subsequent months.
