About the cover
Volume 28 Number 1 07 January 2009

Surface of the egg of a monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) - Butterflies lay the most complex eggs among insects. They show marvellous surfaces, often decorated with ornamental patterns. Some structures can be functionally explained, while others still remain mysterious. This SEM image was captured and artistically processed by Martin Oeggerli, the winner of our 2008 Cover Contest. © Martin Oeggerli 2007 (www.micronaut.ch).
