The developing flight muscles of the fruit fly Drosophila, visualized here using GFP expression (green) from an actin-gfp transgene, are remodeled from larval muscle templates by the fusion of adult muscle precursors expressing the myogenic factor MEF2 (blue). The motor neurons of the larval muscles are re-specified to innervate the flight muscles. Their arborizing axons are highlighted in this image by labeling for the expression of a neural-specific cell surface glycoprotein (red). These muscles and motor neurons are a unique example of how adult structures are refashioned from embryonic counterparts during metamorphosis in animals. Sudipto Roy is an Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Singapore. His interests focus on understanding the genetic basis of muscle and neuronal development in invertebrates (Drosophila) and vertebrates (zebrafish).
