Human hair treated with depilatory foam, viewed under the microscope at 60x magnification. Robert Markus is a PhD student working on the innate immunity of Drosophila at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Szeged, Hungary. Robert, who has a special interest in photography and microscopy, used polarized light and colour-dark-field techniques to create this unusual (and somewhat scary) image. His contribution was awarded the First Prize in the "Scientific Images" category of The EMBO Journal's 2006 Cover Contest.
