About the cover

Volume 24 Number 3 09 February 2005

Crystal structure of a complex between the human heterodimeric SUMO E1 activating enzyme (Sae1/Sae2), SUMO-1, and Mg-ATP. SUMO (yellow) is a member of the ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like protein family and is activated by a dedicated E1 enzyme (blue, pink, and red) in an ATP-dependent process. The SUMO E1 then recruits its cognate SUMO E2 via the Ubl domain (red) to facilitate SUMO transfer between E1 and E2. Once transferred to E2, SUMO can be conjugated to protein targets directly, or through complexes mediated by E3 ligases. Cover Competition

Each year in November, the editors are inviting submissions to a contest for the best scientific and non-scientific cover images. There are prizes and a lot of fun to be had, and the best contributions have a chance to be featured on The EMBO Journal front cover in subsequent months.

The closing date of the 2010 Cover Contest is 15 January 2010. Send a brief email to covers@embojournal.org if you wish to receive a notification when next year's contest is announced.
