Horseshoe crab (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda): a "living fossil" harbouring the ancient origin of the complement system � the background shows haemocytes which, together with the plasma proteins, are highly immune-responsive in mounting an immediate innate immune defense against pathogen infection.
