Horseshoe crab (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda): a "living fossil" harbouring the ancient origin of the complement system � the background shows haemocytes which, together with the plasma proteins, are highly immune-responsive in mounting an immediate innate immune defense against pathogen infection. The image was provided by Jeak Ling Ding, PhD, a professor at the National University of Singapore, with assistance from Ms Ann Nee Yong.
