Giant Sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are among the most splendid natural treasures of California. They are endemic to the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, and can reach 3,000 years of age, 250 feet in height, 40 feet in diameter and weigh 1300 tons. These two grow in Sequoia National Park and are named Ed by Ned. The picture was captured on Velvia film, using a Nikon camera, 20 mm lens, f22, by George Aldridge, a graduate student in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine. He studies the importance of prezygotic reproductive isolating mechanisms to determining rates of hybridization in flowering plants.
