Maiden Flight A juvenile Black-naped Tern (Sterna sumatrana) spreads its wings and takes off on a short flight from a rock off the Southern coast of Singapore. Black-naped Terns are small to medium-sized birds (31 to 37 cm), which inhabit sandy islands of the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans, from the coasts of Hong Kong to Northern Australia and across to middle Africa. The image was taken from a boat by Dr Graeme Guy of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Biopolis, Singapore, with a Canon EOS-1D, 500 mm lens, f8 at 1/1000 s, ISO 400.
