Immature astrocytes, generated in vitro from neurospheres derived from E10.5 Id4-/- mouse embryos. The astrocyte marker glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), detected by fluorescent immunocytochemistry, is shown in green, DAPI stain for DNA in blue. Using this model system, Robert Walker and Fred Sablitzky of the University of Nottingham, UK, are investigating the role of Id4 in neural stem cell renewal and the control of differentiation.
