Crystal structure of the nuclear effector of Notch signaling. Both the CSL transcription factor and its recognition sites on DNA are highly conserved from flies and worms, to mice and humans. Notch-controlled genes are switched on when the cytoplasmic domain is released from activated Notch and binds to a novel CSL domain in this complex. For details, see the article by Rhett Kovall and Wayne Hendrickson, on pages 3441-3451 of this issue.
