Cover. The mitochondrial ATP synthase. The structure of ATP synthase from bovine heart mitochondria was determined to 32 resolution by electron cryomicroscopy. The experimental density map is shown as a grey mesh. The density has been divided into two parts, so that the first part (blue) closely matches the known structure of the F1-c10 subcomplex and the second part (green) consists of the remainder of the enzyme including the peripheral stalk and a portion of the membrane intrinsic F0 region. The model reveals a previously unobserved second domain of F0 and a curvature of the peripheral stalk. For further details, see Rubinstein et al., 6182-6192].
