Cover. Flagellum mutants in trypanosomes. Flagellum assembly has been perturbed by inducible RNAi silencing of the intraflagellar transport machinery. The image shows a mixture of trypanosome cells with normal flagella, with flagella that are too short, or without flagella. The flagellum is stained in green, its basal body is stained in red (spots), and DNA is stained in blue. In trypanosomes, the flagellum is attached along the length of the cell body where a specific structure called the Flagellum Attachment Zone (FAZ) filament can be seen here as a thin red line. The length of the flagellum governs the cell body size (note the difference in cell body size between non-flagellated-no green signal-and normal flagellated cells). By regulating the assembly of the FAZ, the flagellum is required for proper cell morphogenesis and definition of the initiation of cytokinesis. See Kohl et al., 5336-5346].
