Cover. 'Blood clot' (2002). Oil painting by Lizzie Burns, as part of a project for the British Association for the Advancement of Science Festival, to be exhibited in September 2003 in the Salford Museum and Art Gallery, Salford, UK. The painting is based on Professor Tom Mead's innovative research into reducing the risk of heart disease and strokes. The image depicts a harmful blood clot which can be prevented with aspirin and warfarin: platelets shown in pink trigger off the formation of a network of fibres (fibrin). Lizzie Burns works for the Medical Research Council (http://www.mrc.ac.uk/index/public-interest/public-events/public-lizzie_burns.htm).
