Cover. Aoike (Blue Pond) in the Shirakami-Sanchi mountain area of Japan was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 1993. Shirakami is located in the north of Honshu Island. Although there are many ponds around this Aoike, only this pond shows a blue colour. The reason for this mysterious colour is unknown. Asami Makino works for the Sphingolipid Functions Laboratory, Frontier Research System, RIKEN, Japan. The major interest of the group is understanding organization of membrane lipids.
