Cover. This photograph of Les Calanques (from calanco, rock) was taken on the Mediterranean coast of France in a protected paradise covering some 5000 hectares. These sea creeks were formed after the ice age 12 000 years ago, when an increase in sea levels resulted in invasion of the valleys. The photographer, Luisa Figueiredo, is finishing her PhD at the Pasteur Institute (Paris), and will soon be moving to the Rockefeller University (New York) to continue her studies on the telomere biology of human parasites.
