Cover. 'Trace' (detail) 11 m, 1997. 800 pieces of hand-squeezed toilet paper on fishing line. 'Trace has been interpreted as a dinosaur spine, DNA structure, worry beads, and even a garland. For me it is all of these things. At the time I started this piece my mother, who suffers from motor neurone disease, had started telling me that the muscles in her hands were now degenerating. A daily task like sqeezing water out of a piece of clothing was slowly becoming a painstaking struggle.' The artist, Claudia Tannhäuser, has had work shown in many group shows including at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane, and has had solo shows in the United States and Germany. She currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
