Cover. Virtual World (2000), original acrylic painting on paper (40 x 50 cm) by Johannes A.Schmid. The work is indended to reflect the complexity of our civilization, and its tendency to be mirrored by a virtual world created in our minds. The artist works in the Department of Vascular Biology and Thrombosis Research at the University of Vienna, Austria, leading a group focused on protein-protein interactions and the dynamics of signalling molecules as assessed by GFP- and FRET-microscopy. His current research interests involve the activation of endothelial cells during infammation, the signalling pathways involved in this process, novel genes and the interactions of signalling molecules.
