The glycolytic pathway in E.coli. The phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) phosphotransferase system (PTS) is the usual route of glucose uptake and phosphorylation in E.coli. Genes of the glycolytic enzymes responsible for each reaction are shown. Glucokinase encoded by glk may act to phosphorylate glucose generated internally (Fraenkel, 1996).
