Cover. The picture is an acrylic painting on canvas (50
60 cm), entitled 'The life cycle'. It shows in a clockwise fashion the stages of infancy, adulthood and finally death. The artist is Veit Goder, a PhD student in the group of Dr Martin Spiess at the Biozentrum in Basel, Switzerland. He is currently investigating the kinetics of targeting and topogenesis of membrane proteins in mammalian cells (see Goder et al., pages 6704--6712). e-mail: Veit.Goder@unibas.ch
