(A) Schematic representation of the single-lesion DNA substrate and localization of the probes used to analyse the quality of the chromatin at different locations on the substrate. 'Pt site': damaged site; 'distal': diametrically opposed to repair site ⊺3500 bp away. '+800' and '-800': ⊺800 bp away from either side of the lesion. (B) A single membrane corresponding to the gel in Figure 4A was analysed by Southern hybridization using successively the various probes shown in (A) as described in Materials and methods.
