    • Transparent editorial process: Have you noted that the majority of EMBO J papers published online from June 2009 onwards contain a 'Review Process File' in their Supplementary Material section? See transcripts connected to the studies by Wei et al; Janssen et al; or Dunham et al; for some interesting examples of a constructive review process and / or good discussion.

You will also still find our statistics on all manuscripts handled in 2007, as well as the results of a follow-up analysis on manuscripts rejected in 2006, and an Editorial explaining our new policies.

We encourage appropriate citing of primary literature through allowing unlimited references!

    • Nonconformity in ubiquitin compliance

Forked poly-ubiquitin chains that are very poorly degraded by the proteasome have previously been identified. A study in this issue now shows that the proteasomal subunit S5a encodes a novel activity preventing forked-ubiquitin chain formation and at the same time contributes to efficient non-forked conjugation for rapid substrate degradation.

    • Screen for DNA-damage-responsive histone modifications identifies H3K9Ac and H3K56Ac in human cells

DNA damage needs to be detected and repaired in the context of chromatin. Increasing evidence points to an important role of posttranslational modifications of histones in the DNA damage response. A study in this issue of The EMBO Journal has systematically investigated which histone modifications respond to DNA damage in a specific manner.

    • Control of autophagy initiation by phosphoinositide 3-phosphatase jumpy

This study from the Deretic lab describes for the first time the PI3P phosphatase "Jumpy" to negatively regulate autophagy. Furthermore, loss-of-function mutants in a genetic disorder associated with uncontrolled autophagy reveal its (patho-)physiological significance.
