    • In order to make the editorial process more understandable and transparent, the online supplement of all articles published in The EMBO Journal now contains a transcript of reviewer comments, editor's letters, and author responses connected to the respective manuscript. For interesting examples of a constructive review process and/or good discussion, take a look at the Review Process Files for Liu et al., Bhatia et al., Quian et al. or Azar et al.!

You can further find updated statistics on overall timings and manuscript flow in 2008 as well as the results of a new retrospective analysis of the fate of manuscripts submitted to and rejected by The EMBO Journal in 2007.

    • Trapping Rap1 at the telomere to prevent chromosome end fusions

How the Shelterin complex functions to protect chromosome ends from nonhomologous end-joining reactions, and thus to maintain genome stability, is still unclear. Developing an ingenious method to dissect the role of hRAP1 in preventing telomeric fusion independently of other Shelterin components, a new study in this issue of The EMBO Journal lends fresh insight into this question.

    • Co-ordinated regulation of autophagy through mAtg9 and p38IP by p38α MAPK

How autophagy is regulated in response to nutrient conditions remains incompletely understood. In this study, Webber and Tooze provide a potential link from the nutrient-sensing p38 MAPK pathway to the induction of autophagy, via an interaction between the p38 interacting protein (p38IP) and Atg9, which regulates the subcellular localisation of this critical autophagy factor.
