Turbulent dissipation and shear in thermohaline intrusions

Abstract

Laterally coherent patches of turbulence were discovered on the upper and lower boundaries of thermohaline intrusions. The ratio ɛ/Jb is used to compare the relative importance of turbulence produced by Reynolds stress and that produced by the buoyancy flux of double diffusion. Velocity profiles show near-inertial motions through the intrusions.
