Genetic Transfer of Nitrogen Fixation from Klebsiella pneumoniae to Escherichia coli

Abstract

TRANSFER of nitrogen fixation genes (nif) within Klebsiella pneumoniae has been accomplished by transduction1 and conjugation2. These reports have all concerned intra-strain crosses: the transfer of nif to mutants of the same strain deficient in nitrogen fixation. We now report the intergeneric transfer of nif from K. pneumoniae to Escherichia coli, a species which does not naturally fix nitrogen.
