Dr Deborah J Sweet is currently the Editor of two prominent biomedical journals, Cell Stem Cell and Dev Cell. She earned her BA from the University of Cambridge, UK, and her PhD at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, also in Cambridge. She then carried out postdoctoral research at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, USA. Dr Sweet began her publishing career in 1996 as the Editor of Trends in Cell Biology. She joined Cell Press in 1999, and before becoming the Editor of Dev Cell also worked as a Scientific Editor on Cell and Mol Cell. She was closely involved in the successful launches of Dev Cell (in 2001) and Cell Metab (in 2005), and was the launch Editor for Cell Stem Cell in 2007.

This presentation will outline the procedures involved in preparation, submission, review and publication of research manuscripts in high-quality, selective journals such as Cell Stem Cell. It will include an overview of points to consider before submission, an indication of the selection criteria used for publication, and information about how the different parts of the publication process are conducted by journal Editors. The overall aim is to provide information and guidance that will help researchers decide on an appropriate journal for their manuscript and navigate the submission process effectively.
