Milestones in cell division
Seminal experiments and discoveries
shape the development of all scientific fields, and hold valuable
lessons for future researchers. But these milestones are often recognized
only by those directly in the field - hence the 'milestones in cell
division' project, which aims to bring these discoveries to a wider
audience. Here we celebrate the past 100 years of research in the
field of cell division, with 23 'milestones' describing some of the
seminal discoveries and placing them in the context of what was known
at the time.
The milestones have been chosen with the help of 56 experts in the
field, listed in the 'advisors' section, who were each asked to select
the most significant papers in their own area of expertise. These
suggestions were compiled, and the top 23 discoveries were chosen
as the milestones. These milestones are not intended to be comprehensive
reviews - rather, they highlight a discovery (or series of discoveries)
that represents a conceptual advance in the field. The milestones
have been written by editors from the Nature Publishing Group, and
reviewed by the panel of advisors.

Milestones marked with this logo represent
advances for which this year's Nobel Prize for Physiology or
Medicine was awarded. |
The 'milestones in cell division' project is a collaborative effort
from four journals - Nature, Nature Cell Biology, Nature
Reviews Cancer and Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology.
We hope that you will find the milestones - and
the accompanying articles in the library - both enjoyable and informative.
