Practice Further statistics in dentistry Part 2: Research designs 2
This second paper in the further statistics series is concerned with describing and differentiating between the various research designs that may be adopted. Topics covered include: the choice of observational unit, the use of relative risk in a cohort study, the odds ratio in a case-control study. A description of parallel, matched and cross-over designs is presented.

Periapical ameloblastoma – A case report
Ameloblastomas, although often benign, are locally aggressive odontogenic lesions. Presentation of this lesion as a solitary periapical radiolucency associated with a non-impacted tooth is rare. Periapical presentation of this lesion may confuse practitioners.

Research Optical power outputs, spectra and dental composite depths of cure, obtained with blue light emitting diode (LED) and halogen light curing units (LCUs)
This paper tests the hypothesis that a prototype LED light curing unit, (LCU), a commercial LED LCU and a halogen LCU achieve similar cure depths, using two shades of a camphorquinone photoinitiated dental composite.

A number of recent studies have investigated the motivations underlying the career choice of dental and medical students, suggesting that they may be very different; as yet, no studies have provided a directcomparison in the same place. Accordingly, this survey directly compares the motivation of a selection of dental and medical students at Manchester University.
