Retrogroove

News & Notes

The SonicFlex retro instruments from KaVo allow a completely new approach to the way retrograde cavities and fillings can be prepared. The range of seven diamond tips are contra-angled for precise, axially-oriented retrograde root canal preparation, in all areas of both the maxilla and mandible. The SonicFlex retro tips also allow easy access to the root apex and permit a genuine retrograde preparation to the required depth of at least three millimetres. The kit contains cylindrical tips for root preparation, T-shaped tips for undercuts and plugging instruments. An optional adapter unit can also provide sterile irrigant.

Flare for files

News & Notes

Analytic's Quantec System provides effective root canal preparation with its continous taper from orifice to apex. The Axxess Handle is 30 per cent shorter than that of a conventional file, and is available for the entire range of Analytic rotary NiTi Quantec files, including the 0.08, 0.10 and 0.12 tapered Flare series. The Axxess minihead contra angle handpiece makes an additional 5 mm of clearance more easily achieved – ideal for those posterior regions. These features are added to the QEM Electric Motor and Irrigation pump system, which provide the smooth feel and tactile response essential for successful treatment.

Cores and effect

News & Notes

Fuji IX GP from GC Ltd is a new core build-up material for use following endodontic treatment. The non-sticky material, mixed to a putty-like consistency, will not pull back when placed using metal hand instruments and will stay exactly where you place it.

This fluoride releasing material sets in just four minutes and can be trimmed and finished immediately with water-cooled instruments. It is also versatile enough to be used in a variety of applications including permanent and semi-permanent restorative work for children and may be used for the sealing of pits and fissures. It is an ideal geriatric restorative material particularly where root caries is present.

Flexi-strength files

Nitiflex from Dentsply UK is part of a new generation of hand files in flexible nickel-titanium that is demonstratably superior to traditional stainless steel instruments. The nickel–titanium alloy is several times more flexible than the springiest steel and the special core geometry changes progressively throughout the range of sizes to give unique linear flexibility. This flexibility is practically constant throughout the range, so that in progressing from a fine to a thicker file it is far easier to respect the curve of the root canal. Available in ISO sizes 15 to 60 in 21 mm and 25 mm lengths.

File to file

News & Notes

Henry Schein have added the K3 endodontic file system to their range of products. Engineered for efficiency, K3 is designed to cut quickly and safely with unparalleled debris removal and addresses technical and procedural issues that no other endodontic instrument does.

Unlike normal U-shaped files, the K3 has been designed to reduce friction on the canal wall and the unique 'positive rake angle' results in an efficient cutting performance as opposed to the scraping action of a normal instrument.

The access handle improves access to the posterior region by reducing the total length by over 4 mm when compared with conventional systems and with a variable core diameter, K3 maintain flexibility over the entire cutting length. The K3 system comes complete with 10 tip sizes with colour coding.

Stick to 3M

Adhesives available from 3M Dental include the RelyX ARC adhesive for endodontic post cementation. This can be used in conjunction with the Scotchbond dental adhesive system to produce high micro-mechanical bonds to metals and tooth structure. This will also produce minimum film thickness to ensure complete seating.

For routine cementation of posts, RelyX luting cement is available. It has the advantage of simple application and easy clean up. RelyX luting cement is used for applications that typically would have been luted using zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate or traditional glass ionomer cements.

Both these cements are resin-based which are virtually insoluble in oral fluids and can bond to dentine and enamel with the use of acid etching techniques and bonding agents. It is also claimed that the removal of the smear layer and the use of unfilled resin produces a more retentive cement thatn zinc phosphate.

Astra Tech implants

The Astra Tech dental implant system is a two component system that claims to offer greater flexibility in the approach to implant treatment as well as allowing for early loading protocols. The two component system offers more flexibility for both one and two stage protocols and for adjusting the soft tissue height adaptation over time to obtain the optimal aesthetic result.

It also means that the choice between a one or two stage procedure need not be made until after the surgery has started. And with separate trans-mucosal element/abutment it is always possible to select the optimal dimensions, with the option to change it if necessary.
